Door to Door Scams: What to Watch Out For

By June 28, 2016 June 26th, 2019 No Comments

Along with the wonderful weather we have received to kick off the summer, we have all seen the door knockers and solicitors going door to door, hoping for a big sale. While it may be all fun and games when it is the girl scouts delivering cookies, we hope to give you some insights on the dangers of door to door scammers.

How It Works:

Scammers are great sales people. They know what to say, and exactly how to say it. There have been instances where scammers will go up to your door and say that your security company has gone out of business and they are there to update your system. Do not ever give away your home security information to strangers, especially someone who seems to be targeting your home specifically.

These people are very aggressive sales people, so be careful. Solicitors are illegal in most states, so if you are feeling confrontational (and safe, be sure your personal safety is always the #1 priority) ask them for their solicitors or security license. If they say they do not need it, simply tell them you will call the police and let them solve it.

Red Flags:

The scammers are going to need some important information in order to get what they want. They will ask about your home security and typically ask for your social security number or credit card information. Under no circumstances should you give away this information! Unfortunately, some scammers prey on the goodwill of its targets by asking if you would want to sign up for a magazine subscription to raise money for a cause or charity. It is important to keep your private information out of the hands of the public, and especially out of the hands of criminals.
