Best Practices For Using and Maintaining Your Home Security System

By May 27, 2015 September 23rd, 2022 No Comments

Modern home security systems are reliable and efficient. However, that doesn’t mean that they are maintenance free. Indeed, it’s best to view your system as a machine that will require periodic inspections and maintenance.

It’s important to do simple things like conduct a weekly walk-around of your home. Check to ensure doors are locking properly, light bulbs haven’t burned out, and that foliage isn’t blocking windows and other entryways. If you do discover something that needs fixed or trimmed, take care of that as soon as you can.

You should also check the control panel of your security system at least once a month. Make sure the signals are being transmitted properly and that all of the doors/windows/cameras that are connected are working correctly. If your system is WiFi connected and mobile accessible, test the interface as well to ensure that “all systems are go.” If you discover any issues, contact your security company and schedule the repairs immediately. Often, this is as simple as a software update.

Additional checks you should perform include testing your fire extinguishers to ensure they’re properly charged. This can be done by simply looking at the gauge. If it’s not, you can recharge it for around $15.

Finally, be sure to make sure that everyone in your home is comfortable using your home security system, has proper keys/codes, etc. A quick way to do this is to have a family meeting where you can discuss the importance of home security with your children to gently impress upon them the importance of locking doors, turning the system on when they leave, etc.
